What Is Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM)?
Don't you know about WMM? Well, if not, then we have the answer ready for you. Just read on and prepare to be amazed. Wi-Fi Multimedia is a subset of the IEEE 802.11e standard for wireless LAN applications. It defines and optimizes Wi-Fi signal quality and performance by prioritizing Wi-Fi network traffic when multiple concurrent applications compete for network resources. WMM does not guarantee throughput. It is also known as Wireless Multimedia Extension. It is vital because most people need to learn what it means, so they have yet to learn how to use it or if they need it. The most common use of WMM is when trying to watch Netflix while someone on your home network uses a video game that requires much bandwidth. With WMM turned on, Netflix will get priority over other network traffic. You can watch your show uninterrupted by lag or buffering issues caused by other home users using too much bandwidth on their devices simultaneously. Wi-Fi is also a way of life. It's how we connect, how we entertain ourselves, and how we get things done. Sometimes it can feel like you're waiting forever for that page to load—and that's when we start wondering whether my Wi-Fi is up to snuff. Is it slow because our router is old? Or is it slow because many others are using our network at once? Does it matter which one is true? Here's something else to consider: What if there were some certification processes for Wi-Fi routers? One that would tell you precisely what kind of performance you could expect from any given router before buying it? You could decide which router would work best for your needs: one fast enough for streaming movies or one that could handle the demands of playing online games with your friends.
