What Is Router Firmware?
Router firmware is like the operating system on your computer. It's a lot like the operating system on your laptop, only better. Whereas most computers run an OS that you can update with new versions whenever you want, routers have their firmware embedded in ROM and can't be updated. It makes router firmware more stable than PC software and less flexible. Routers are usually limited to one or two manufacturers since each manufacturer writes its device firmware. The router firmware is the essential software in a router's read-only memory (ROM). The ROM makes up a computer's memory and stores instructions that tell the router how to function. Firmware is also known as firmware or flash. It is a computer program that controls many functions of a device, such as a computer or embedded system. It usually resides on read-only (ROM) or flash memory, although some systems use hardwired logic circuitry instead of ROM. In either case, firmware is often stored in fusible links that can be erased by melting the fuse link and soldering closed the circuit. The word firmware was originally an informal term for software working in embedded systems with limited resources and hardware that could not support large operating systems such as Linux or Microsoft Windows, requiring lower-level applications to function correctly. The term was popularized by IBM in 1961 when it began referring to code that ran on its System/360 mainframe computers. Firmware is the software that makes a device do what it does. It's like a computer's operating system, except it's usually much more limited in scope. It's what runs your printer and ensures that the right things happen when you hit print. The way it works is that vendors release new versions of firmware all the time, with new features and bug fixes. Unlike with a computer operating system, you can't just uninstall the firmware on your printer and install a new version. You have to wait for your vendor to release one!
