What Is Floating-Point Unit (FPU)?
The Floating Point Unit, also known as the FPU for short, is a relatively high-tech piece of equipment that we will now explain. You know there will be instances when you must deal with those annoying fractions and numbers with decimals. They can be a nuisance in the you-know-what, that's for sure. To put things into perspective, this is where the FPU steps in! The FPU is analogous to a very advanced calculator, which can solve various mathematical issues involving floating point numbers. As it is so intelligent, its logic circuitry is solely committed to processing numbers of this kind. There's a good reason why they refer to it as a "specialized coprocessor"! You may be pondering what mathematical issues the FPU can solve now. The solution is easy: every one of them! Okay, not ALL of them, but certainly the ones that matter the most to you. In this conversation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and even square roots are on the table. That's correct, and this compact powerhouse can perform any task. Back in the day, FPUs were even more remarkable than they are today. They could solve challenging mathematical problems, such as those involving exponential and trigonometric computations. If we're being honest, that's much significant heavy lifting right there. These days, challenges of that nature are typically solved by routines contained within software libraries. Why spend the extra money on a floating-point unit (FPU) when your standard old processor can also perform mathematical operations? The correct response is rapidity. Since the FPU was developed to operate exclusively with floating point numbers, it can process these numbers at a much higher speed than the microprocessor circuitry that is typically used. Compare it to something like a sports vehicle as opposed to a minivan. Even though they get you from point A to point B, the sports vehicle will do it quicker. (and look more relaxed doing it). The FPU is analogous to a miniature math wizard in that it can solve various mathematical challenges involving floating point numbers. It is swift, brilliant, and incredibly fabulous. So, the next time you struggle with fractions or decimals, remember that the FPU is here to help you!
