In the last few years, the consumer electronics technology market has been bustling and booming with innovation in wearable technology, especially those that are equipped with artificial intelligence (AI).

One of the most prominent and promising wearable technology devices was Humane’s AI pin, a portable projection device that hooked itself onto clothing and functioned as a smartphone. This was done by projecting applications, calls, and voice help on surfaces such as walls or hands.

Well, that majestic and magical device is about to go extinct.

First, through an update on its support forums, the company revealed that it was winding down its $499 (starting) consumer AI Pin as its “business priorities have shifted.”

This meant that new purchases of the AI pin would be discontinued, while existing pins would stop connecting to Humane’s servers after February 28, 2025.

Customers will no longer be able to call, message, access the cloud, or leverage AI queries and responses.

As for data access, that too will be unavailable post February 28 (12pm PST), as the company will delete all consumer data, including stored pictures, videos, and notes.

Following this, Humane published a news release on its website, which revealed that global technology leader HP Inc. (also published on HP’s website) had announced a definitive agreement to acquire key AI capabilities from Humane.

This includes their AI-powered platform Cosmos, highly skilled technical talent, and intellectual property with more than 300 patents and patent applications.

Effectively, HP agreed to acquire most of Humane’s assets for $116 million. The deal is expected to close by the end of February 2025.

The move comes as HP looks to advance its transformation into a more experience-led company, bringing Humane’s highly-skilled engineers, architects, and product innovators to HP’s Technology and Innovation Organization.

“This investment will rapidly accelerate our ability to develop a new generation of devices that seamlessly orchestrate AI requests both locally and in the cloud,” said Tuan Tran, President of Technology and Innovation at HP. “Humane’s AI platform Cosmos, backed by an incredible group of engineers, will help us create an intelligent ecosystem across all HP devices from AI PCs to smart printers and connected conference rooms. This will unlock new levels of functionality for our customers and deliver on the promises of AI.”

“We’re excited to join HP at such a pivotal moment in the industry and help shape the future of intelligent experiences,” said Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, Co-founders of Humane. “HP’s scale, global reach, and operational excellence—combined with our design-led approach, integration technology, and engineering expertise—will redefine workforce productivity.”

While Humane is set to fall out of the consumer wearables market, its rival Garmin has been doubling down on its innovation.

As such, the company has been focused on integrating AI technology into its products even more, while also infusing advanced mental health monitoring, vital indicators such as heart rate variability (HRV), and performance tracking.

As a pioneer in the field, Garmin produced the first GPS smartwatch more than two decades ago. Since then, the company has launched a diverse range of smartwatches that cater to the unique needs of people, spanning from amateur runners to heavy users.

“While the wearable industry is poised for innovations, including advancements in artificial intelligence, we believe AI and other emerging technologies will only reach their full potential when backed by reliable, long-lasting, and accurate wearables,” said Juha Villanen, Head of B2B & Partnership for Garmin Emerging Markets and India.

Garmin is also collaborating with researchers to explore the potential of wearable technology in education and mental health, as it looks to offer products across various price ranges to cater to everyone’s needs. This comes as the company is experiencing an anomalous dip in demand in India.

Do you think HP’s move to acquire Humane will allow it to grow in the wearable technology sector? Do you think Garmin’s plan to bring affordable smartwatches to everyone will help it capture the market?
