What Is SAP Integration Adapter (SAP IA)?
It's not about the destination or the journey. It's about the road trip. SAP integration adapters are like those old VW vans that your dad used to own—they're just sort of there in the background while you're driving, but they're so crucial to your experience that it's hard to think about what life would be like without them. An SAP IA is a component connecting a software application with an SAP environment. They facilitate the conversion of inbound and outbound cross-platform messages, which are transformed into XML-based messages and sent to related SAP applications. SAP IAs are connectors providing cross-platform message conversion and system translation of connected SAP environment applications. SAP IAs work with SAP exchange infrastructure (SAP XI) and NetWeaver. If you're a developer or network administrator, you'll know that connecting different systems can be a real pain. But what if you could join them in a simple, fast and reliable way? What if you could translate messages across platforms so that your applications could speak to each other no matter where they were hosted? That's what SAP IAs do! They're connectors that provide cross-platform message conversion and system translation of connected SAP environment applications. That means they work with the SAP exchange infrastructure (SAP XI) and NetWeaver—two platforms that allow you to connect your company's applications. If you've ever thought about communicating with someone who uses a different medium than you, you know how frustrating it can be. You're trying to tell them something important, but they don't understand. Maybe they use a different operating system or don't speak the same language. SAP XI provides platform-level OS connectivity. SAP IAs ensure that messages are conveyed via understandable formats. SAP IAs use an XML schema for cross-communication, meaning each letter is mapped according to the recipient's platform compatibility. So if you need an intermediary between two people whose platforms don't match up well—or even between two people who want to talk across platforms—you know who to call: SAP!
