With a data breach, a friend's private photos, someone's credentials and passwords, or your personal information can no longer be considered confidential. Data breaches happen daily and by anyone, from teenagers to government officials. A data breach is a security issue where unauthorized individuals access organizations' data. A data breach occurs when an individual or group steals and publishes data and leaves it unsecured in an illegal location, leading to identity theft. Data breaches are also known as data spills or leaks. It can prevent data breaches by using a security system that monitors access to all data and logs every time a person accesses or changes the data. This data can be used in a breach to track down the person responsible. The most important thing to do if you think you have been involved in a data breach is to act quickly. Contact your bank or credit card company to inform them that you may have been compromised and get a new card. Contact your service providers, tell them you may have been compromised, and get a new login. Finally, you should also contact law enforcement and report the breach to try and track down the person who did it if they can. Be wary of clicking on email links; never open attachments if you don't trust the source. Most data breaches occur when employees or contractors with access to sensitive data leave their computers or laptops unsecured or don't follow basic security protocols. Keep your computer and other devices secure and follow company protocols for accessing sensitive data. Keep your login credentials private from everyone; change your passwords regularly. Ensure your anti-virus software is up to date, and don't click on any links in emails from unknown sources. If you feel like your computer has been hacked, change your passwords, run scans and get professional help if you think you're infected.
