What Is Big Blue?

Big Blue? The Big Blue? Oh, that Big Blue! It's easier to imagine a company as big and blue as IBM with a nickname. After all, Big Blue is one of the biggest companies in technology, and it's been around since the 1890s. So… where did this moniker come from? Theories abound. Some say it's because IBM was founded in New York City, known as the "Big Apple." Others have suggested that IBM got its name because of its large size (it was one of the first companies to use computers). Another theory is that IBM earned its name because it was once run by an ex-boxer, Thomas J. Watson Jr., who supposedly had a reputation for being tough on employees. This might have inspired employees to make fun of him behind his back by calling him "Big Tom." But according to an article in Business Week magazine on June 8th, 1981, called "No. 1's Awesome Strategy," there may be no definitive answer: "The nickname comes from the pervasiveness of IBM's blue computers." It's no secret that IBM has had a long history of creating some of the most iconic and, in some cases, downright bizarre branding campaigns. From its infamous "smarter planet" slogan to the "I [heart] I-B-M" ads from the 70s, the company has always been known for its creative marketing tactics. Yet what about that nickname? Where did it come from? The answer may surprise you! IBM's nickname is derived from its iconic blue suit color, which used to be mandatory for all male employees. Blue is a prevalent color in branding because it represents strength and stability, two qualities every company wants to project to their customers. It also evokes images of the sky and sea, commonly associated with calmness and serenity.
