WMC 2025—which is being held from March 3 to 6 at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via in Barcelona, Spain—already threw up some eye-catching concept devices and some amazing upcoming technology aimed at consumers around the world.
At the same time, the world's largest event for the mobile technology industry also witnessed some exciting reveals from various industry-leading businesses, that could be set to revolutionize the mobile devices sector, as far as businesses are concerned.
We already got a head start on the slew of announcements made by Red Hat, most of which centered around RAN (Radio Access Network) technology—spanning Open RAN, vRAN (virtualized), AI-RAN (artificial intelligence), and more—with names such as SoftBank Corp, Rakuten, Fujitsu, KDDI, and Orange.
Following this, Nokia revealed major partnerships in its pursuit to boost AI-RAN technology, which included tie-ups with NVIDIA, Softbank, and T-Mobile. The move comes as Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia believes, “To fully harness the transformative power of AI-RAN, Nokia is working hand-in-hand with an ecosystem of leading industry partners.”
Ahead of this, Nokia teamed up with NTT (NTT Corporation and NTT DOCOMO) to demonstrate a new mobile network architecture—which is a part of the Inclusive Core mobile network architecture—being built by NTT and DOCOMO to meet the evolving data processing needs of the 6G era.
AWS also chimed in with its new AWS Outpost racks that are built to ensure on-premises low latency, high throughput workloads, including Cloud Radio Access Network (RAN). AWS and Samsung also demonstrated how AI can successfully be applied to RAN to produce meaningful impacts.
To boost security for mobile users, Vodafone announced it was partnering with IBM to protect customers and their data from future risks coming from quantum computers, especially while browsing the web on their smartphones or other devices. As such, the two companies have developed a new proof of concept using the IBM Quantum Safe technology to enhance Vodafone’s Secure Net, its mobile all-in-one digital security service.
Here, Vodafone will use IBM Quantum Safe technology to implement new post-quantum cryptography standards to the existing encryption methods, as it looks to introduce new, attack-resistant cryptographic algorithms across its networks, as well as business and consumer products.
Vodafone also revealed it signed an agreement with AST SpaceMobile to create a jointly owned European satellite service business—SatCo—to serve mobile network operators in all European markets with the aim of 100% geographic coverage in Europe.
Furthermore, the company is introducing a modern and dedicated mobile communications service that prioritizes emergency services and other first responders in Europe. Through a collaboration with TELMA (Telecommunication Research Institute of University of Málaga) and Intel, Vodafone revealed it developed a new algorithm to boost 5G uplink speeds and capacity.
GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association)—the organization behind MWC—spoke about partnerships in the automotive and aviation industries, such as 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), Japan Automotive Software Platform and Architecture (JASPAR), Outsight, Safran Passenger Innovations, and Seamless Air Alliance.
Microsoft unveiled a telco industry data model in Microsoft Fabric, designed to unify telecom data across network performance and customer interactions in a single analytics platform. The model helps telecom providers streamline data management, optimize processes, and leverage AI for automation and personalization.
“Our ecosystem of customers and partners are harnessing the power of AI to reimagine customer experiences, modernize networks, automate business operations, and drive growth,” said Silvia Candiani, Vice President, Worldwide Telecommunications, Media and Gaming, Microsoft.
Keysight and Ericsson are collaborating to develop a pre-6G test setup using cmWave frequency to explore low latency, high data rates, and enhanced coverage for future 6G networks, as Ericsson aims to realize 6G by 2030.
Ericsson also partnered with Qualcomm to test the interoperability of devices using a frequency band dedicated to 5G railway communications in Europe.
ServiceNow introduced an AI platform for business transformation that includes the use of AI agents in the telecom industry to “help solve the biggest challenges facing business leaders,” as per ServiceNow’s Rohit Batra.
The Connectivity Co-Funding Initiative, a project co-funded by Meta and Internet Society, will work to bring affordable internet connections to the 2.6 billion people around the world. It will see funding of $30 million in the initial years.
Broadcom unveiled VeloSky, a new networking service built to make network convergence easier for CSPs (communication service providers) using integrated fiber, cellular, and satellite connectivity through a single appliance.
Cisco announced it was expanding its Agile Service Networking offering to help service providers build and run their networks. This will come with extra visibility in on-network and off-network connectivity in real-time for home and mobile users. It will include its ThousandEyes Connected Devices suite of products and tests.
Harman showed off its “sight beyond sight” vehicle-to-cloud software service—Ready Aware—to bring real-time alerts to enable drivers to make better and safer decisions. This will extend to include updates on road hazards.
Numerous telecom giants are joining hands to create a new Open Telecom AI Platform in a bid to build a new “central intelligence layer” for telecom and digital services with the use of automation and AI. The founding members include AMD, Cisco, Nokia, and Jio Platforms.
All of this comes as an Amdocs report finds that CSPs are losing $24 billion per year due to problems and inefficiencies in company processes. This figure equals roughly 7% of global telco revenues. This is based on a survey conducted by Omdia, consisting of over 200 telco executives. Other key issues identified include people lacking essential skills, broken operational processes, and existing systems lacking functionality.
However, these problems might be fixable “if CSPs adopt a holistic approach and focus on resolving the challenges across the presales, sales, management and renewal lifecycle,” as per the report.
