What Is VP9?
If you're like us, you love streaming videos. We watch them on our phones, laptops, and tablets, but the problem is that our internet connections sometimes need to be faster to stream in high definition. So, we have to choose between lower-quality video or waiting forever for a buffering circle to complete. Well, we say no more! The VP9 codec is here to save the day, and it's free from royalty fees so that you can use it without extra fees! The VP9 codec was developed by Google as an open-source technology and claimed to reduce the bit rate of a given video transmission by 50% while maintaining high quality. If you've been frustrated by slow internet speeds, this new codec could be just what you need to get back into watching HD content without paying extra fees or dealing with low-quality streams. Since VP9 is here to stay, let's get you up to speed with a few more details. VP9 is the new codec developed by Google and other tech companies like ARM and Qualcomm. It was released in 2013, and since then, it has been gaining popularity among users. Its popularity is because it provides an efficient way to compress such large video files without losing anything to lower the quality. Streaming up to 720p video over any channel previously handling 480p videos is possible. It utilizes a 64×64 superblock which is again subdivided into smaller blocks for compression. It supports four transform sizes, namely 32×32, 16×16, 8×8 and 4×4. The codec codes each frame into three sections: uncompressed header, compressed header and compressed frame data. Many YouTube streams and Netflix video services already support the codec. It has been announced that YouTube will use VP9 as the standard format. Many tech giants like LG, Panasonic, and Sony rightfully keep it.
