What Is Virtual To Virtual (V2V)?
Did you know that you can copy, migrate or replicate a virtual machine (VM) image, data or disk partition to another VM? This process is called Virtual to Virtual (V2V), and it's the best way to move your data from one environment to another. V2V can use V2V to move VMs from one hypervisor to another without disrupting running services and applications. It ensures that business continuity is maintained during the migration process. A VM can be migrated from an ESX host to an ESXi host, or vice-versa, via vCenter Converter Standalone (VCS). In addition, V2V can be used to migrate a VM from one physical computer to another with minimal downtime. V2V allows a company to quickly and easily move its data and applications to a new platform without any interruption in service. Migrating a VM between hosts is non-disruptive, as the VM is shut down during the move. It can be initiated manually or automatically (depending on the setup). When migrating between different hypervisors, the process may require manual intervention but can often be done via a plug-in or API call. V2V is a valuable tool for upgrading hardware and upgrading operating systems. Many businesses use this process to save costs when upgrading their hardware or software. V2 V2V means "virtual to virtual," which allows you to copy a virtual machine (VM) image data from one host machine to another. The process is implemented and managed through a virtual machine manager (VMM) or virtualization hypervisor. V2V works when the complete VM image data is copied and transferred to another host machine, a VM or a physical computer/server; similarly, each newly created and hosted VM instance may be swapped between different backend hosts. VM backups are made on a shared storage location or a remote host. VM data backups are created on a shared storage location or the local host. To create a VM backup, you must log in to the vCenter Server of the source ESXi host. Select the VM and click on the Actions drop-down menu. From the drop-down menu, select Backup. Select a location for saving your Backup: drop-down menu, select the shared storage location where you want to save the Backup. Click on OK.
