What Is Technobabble?
You can't talk about technobabble without the most famous example: Star Wars. All sorts of terminology describe things and how they work in a galaxy far, far away. All this jargon is meant to sound relaxed and scientific, but it's just a bunch of made-up words and terminology that regular people would never use. Technobabble can be a term for almost any jargon or language that relies on jargon, acronyms, or made-up words to confuse listeners or obfuscate an issue. The time can be used positively (to refer to how tech companies use terminology to make their products seem more advanced) and negatively (when vocabulary is used to hide something). Another aspect of technical jargon contributing to technobabble is industry-specific terminology that sounds complex but is easy to understand when explained clearly. For example, if I say something like, "The CPU core temperature has exceeded the threshold," you might think we are talking about some alien technology. Still, we are just talking about how hot my computer is getting! Technobabble may also be referred to as techno-speak, defined as "the use of terminology from the field of computers and information technology in non-technical contexts." It can include using words like "cyber" or "digital" when discussing things unrelated to computers or digital technologies. Technobabble makes a sentence sound like it means something when it doesn't. Let's take the word "technobabble" itself. Techno- means "related to technology" because we're talking about tech slang, tech-speak and proprietary jargon. Babble means "nonsense" because that's what technobabble is: many words that don't make sense. So technobabble is nonsense about technology! Let's take the word "technobabble" itself.
