What Is Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux)?

The Linux kernel is a beast. Its features make it work better, faster and stronger, but some also make it vulnerable to attacks. That is why we have built Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux), a module specially designed for the Linux kernel that enables features that support security policies for access control, including mandatory access control (MAC). With SELinux, you can be sure your system is protected from unauthorized access, focusing more on what matters most when getting stuff done. One of the critical features of SELinux is that it can restrict the operating system's access to your data. If you are running a web server, you should make sure that only people who should be able to access your website can do so. SELinux can help by locking down all your files and directories so only those with proper permissions can look inside them. You may also want to use SELinux if you run an enterprise-level server system where sensitive information is stored on disk and hard drives. This way, if someone gets into your system and tries to read through those files or directories without permission from an administrator, they will not be able to do so because SELinux will prevent them from accessing them until it is time for them. To do so! SELinux also has another feature called Multi-Level Security (MLS) which allows users with different permissions within their organization (or even within their departments). The National Security Agency (NSA) has a big job: protecting the security of whole systems by separating information based on its confidentiality and integrity requirements. SELinux results from several projects undertaken by the NSA as part of its Information Assurance Mission, which is geared toward providing security for whole systems. It is a great way to protect your system from bad actors but can be tricky to use initially.
