What Is Open Source Initiative (OSI)?

It's not just the open-source movement that's making waves. The Open Source Initiative (OSI) is a nonprofit organization promoting open-source software. The organization was founded in 1998 by Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond, who served as OSI's president from its inception until 2005. Raymond has made a name for himself as one of the most prominent personalities in the world of the open source movement. He is known for his contributions to security and Internet standards and his work on open-source software licensing. Raymond was born in 1963 in New Jersey, USA. He received his bachelor's degree from Clarkson University and his master's degree from Stony Brook University before starting his career at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). He joined Red Hat in 1998 and stayed with them until 2005 when he moved on to other ventures such as OSI, where he served as president until 2009, when he became chairman emeritus. The Open Source Initiative is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing open-source software. Open-source software is freely available to use, modify, and distribute and can be expanded upon by anyone who wants to improve it. There needs to be more transparency about the Open Source Initiative (OSI) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF). Both organizations have similar histories, motivations, and goals. While OSI is based on a more pragmatic, business-driven approach to open-source software, FSF is based on anti-establishment and moralistic viewpoints. Nevertheless, the two organizations have worked together on several projects, and even Mr. Stallman has acknowledged that their differences are primarily philosophical. OSI's goal is to build an open-source community worldwide and promote awareness about its significance in modern society. To accomplish this, OSI preserves and supports the Open Source Definition, which defines what open source means. It also provides the OSI-Certified Open Source Software Certification Program for software that meets this definition. The certification program ensures that any software is distributed using a license that guarantees users' rights to read, use, modify, and re-distribute it without restriction or modification and encourages them to do so!
