SHA-3 competition to develop a new secure hash algorithm was held by the United States National Security Agency (NSA) in 2007. You've got a problem—you need to connect two sets of wires. You don't have time to solder them together, and you're not going to splice them. What do you do? A punch-down block is an answer. It's a tiny metal block with a bunch of pegs to which you can stick the solid copper wire and cross-connect the cables.
