What Is Locked Down Device (LDD)?
Locking down your devices is illegal, and it's not cool. We're all for protecting things from getting hacked—but when locking down our devices, we'll risk having our information stolen over being forced to use a device that can't be customized or repaired. That's why laws make unlocking devices illegal, even if you do it yourself. What exactly does "unlocking" mean? It's when someone (usually a techie) uses their skills to remove the software that prevents you from changing it on your device. This could be useful if you want to add new features or change your phone or computer after it ships from the manufacturer! When you lock down a device, it's not just the device. You're looking down the law. In other words, you're breaking the law if you've been locked out of your devices—by accident or on purpose. It's not just about your device. It's about your rights as a citizen. That's because, in most countries worldwide, unlocking devices are protected by legislation that declares engineering to unlock devices illegal—including jailbreaking. So even if you want to use your phone on another carrier or in another country, or if you're going to ensure that all of your apps work together correctly, the law says no dice! The good news is that unlocking your phone can be as simple as changing an app. The bad news is that this change can introduce security risks; in some cases, you could get up to five years in prison. If you're willing to take the risk, you might be able to use your phone with a different carrier than the one you initially bought it from. All you need to do is find an app that lets you unlock your device, install it on your phone and then… wait a few minutes until the app has finished working its magic! The process isn't complicated—but if you're not careful, it could land you in serious hot water. If you decide to go ahead, make sure that whatever app you use is legal where you live.
