What Is Lights-Out Management (LOM)?
Lights-out management (Short for LOM) is a form of remote access management for servers. It allows for greater security for hardware, as well as for lower facility costs. If you've ever been to a data center, then you know that they can be pretty dank and dreary places. With LOM, it's not just about the physical location anymore—it's about how easy it is to access and manage your servers anywhere. With LOM, you can access your server from anywhere and anytime. You can even set up a schedule so that it automatically unlocks itself when you're ready to use it again! This means that if you're paying for 24/7 access to one server but only need it during business hours on weekdays, then LOM lets you save money by only paying for those times you need the server. LOM systems also give you more control over who has access to your system. With traditional management, anyone with physical access to the facility could log into your machine and do whatever they wanted—or worse, damage or destroy it entirely! With LOM, however, only authorized users can log into their machines remotely—and if someone tries to log in without Lights-out, management is a new take on the "humans plus hardware" problem. You know the one: servers can't work in 100-degree temperatures and don't like being in a room with broken air conditioning. Humans, who are supposed to work with those servers, can't work in 80-degree temperatures, either. It's a classic conundrum—and it's just as relevant today as it was when we were all sitting around in caves with our troglodyte friends. But now you've got an option: lights-out management! This solution addresses the "humans plus hardware" problem by providing a dedicated server room with specific cooling solutions and optimal conditions for server deployment. Lights-out management gives business leaders another option for deploying resources and addressing this age-old problem once and for all!
