What Is Layer 5?
Layer 5 is the layer that connects you to your favorite cat videos so that you can watch them daily! It's also the layer that lets you do all your banking online, so you don't have to go into the real world. It's about more than just connecting. It's also about disconnecting, and Layer 5 is where that happens. The session layer is part of the Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) Model's fifth layer, the session layer. A connection session is created and managed on this layer named for its function. Two or more applications establish and maintain connections through this layer. The session layer is in charge of handling connection and coordination procedures. The session layer coordinates application connection coordination, setup, and termination. The session layer protocol is like a car. It has four wheels, a steering wheel, and a seatbelt, and it can go fast or slow, depending on how you want to get from point A to point B. If you're driving with friends, there's no reason to go fast. You can even stop and make some conversation along the way! If you're moving to an important meeting with clients paying for your services, you should put your foot on the gas pedal and get there as quickly as possible without interruptions. So How does this relate to the session layer? Well, think of it this way: The session layer is like a car's engine—it ensures that each packet gets where it needs to go and keeps track of all the different packages simultaneously. It also handles packet loss and recovery so that if something goes wrong with one packet in a group of packets (like if one person gets lost on their way home from work), everything else doesn't fall apart around them!
