What Is Health Information Exchange (HIE)?
Do you know how it is that you are always trying to figure out whether or not your doctor is up to date on the newest trends in health? We regret that they are not, but this is the truth. It's not just the medical professionals either. Your health insurance provider, pharmacy, and possibly even hospitals are all using information that needs to be updated regarding the most effective treatments for you. This can result in a significant amount of time and money being wasted and preventative care not being delivered at the appropriate times. What is the answer? The Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a platform that gives healthcare facilities, such as hospitals and clinics, pharmacies and insurance companies, the ability to exchange patient records. As a result, everyone has access to the most up-to-date information regarding the conditions of their patients and the treatments they receive. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPAA, is a piece of legislation that protects the confidentiality of patient information. It was passed into law in 1996 to ensure that individuals could maintain the confidentiality of their health information. However, it has been a very long time since it was written, and the industry as a whole has undergone significant transformations in that time. The Health Information Exchange, also known as HIE, is a system for exchanging information that enables medical practices to provide data for national research and analysis without infringing upon HIPAA privacy regulations. In addition, it is generally supportive of the concept of portable information, which refers to the ability to take your medical records with you as you transition from one doctor to another or from one hospital to another. Groups have been formed with particular directives and goals to facilitate HIE. These directives and plans include lowering the costs of information exchange and complying with privacy laws.
