What Is Email Hosting?

TechDogs Avatar

Hosting your email is like hosting your phone, but for the internet. If you thought email was just for sending messages to friends, think again. An email has become a business tool for communicating with clients and coworkers. And with the rise of social media, it's become a necessary part of marketing your business and keeping in touch with customers. You need a dedicated email application and platform when you've got many emails to manage. Your choices are limited if you're looking for a free webmail solution. You can choose any hosting provider that offers webmail services as part of their free package, but most of these free options need more features of more advanced email platforms and applications. Most providers provide advanced email solutions compared to free webmail solutions and host them on dedicated email platforms. The provider manages the user's domain name, including security email authentication schemes like filtering, replication and rerouting. Service providers offer different techniques and services according to their target demographic, so some are more geared toward security. In contrast, others are more geared toward email management and filtering. Free webmail is usually basic POP3-based email, while hosting services use customized open-source applications like SquirrelMail, RoundCube or Horde. If you've ever wondered what the difference is between hosted and in-house email servers, we've got an answer for you: your email address. Hosted business email addresses are typically in the format person@companyname.com, where "person" could be a sales rep or customer service rep, and "company name" could be a company name (like "Google"). Larger enterprises that host their email servers will also use this format, but it's less common. You can tell they have their domain names instead of @gmail.com or @yahoo.com addresses. In-house email servers can also have domain names that look like companynames.com/person@companyname.com, but they're almost always owned by large enterprises that run their servers and only host their email on those same servers. Hosting your email is like hosting your phone number, but for the internet. You don't have to worry about paying per message, creating an account with every service you want to use, or even checking it regularly (because we'll do that for you). We'll give you a personal domain name and handle all of the technical details so you can focus on what matters: running your business!
