What Is Dual-Homed Host?
You're sitting at home, watching Netflix. You open the app and select a movie to watch, but you're interrupted by a message: "Please enter your password." It's not coming from Netflix. It's from your dual-homed host as it is trying to keep you safe from something that may leak all your data into the internet world, and there for a reason. Your dual-homed host is an application-based firewall and first line of defense/protection technology between a trusted network, such as a corporate network, hone network, garage network etc. and an untrusted network, such as the Internet you may find at a restaurant or a coffee shop you have visited to have a quick sip of coffee. The dual-homed host is a common term for routers or gateways that provide secure applications and services to an untrusted network. If someone attempts to access the application or service without proper credentials, they'll be blocked by the dual-homed host until they enter valid credentials. A dual-homed host is designed to operate as a trusted host on all connected networks. It is achieved by, first and foremost, filtering all traffic between these networks. A dual-homed host can be dedicated to hardware or software. A dual-homed host is the first line of defense against malicious attacks, malware, and data theft. A dual-homed host sits between a trusted and untrusted network; it must be hardened against attack and monitored closely. A dual-homed host is the best of both worlds. It's a multi-homed host that prevents direct IP traffic between trusted and untrusted networks. It means it can stand in as a bastion host or be used to provide Internet access to a computer that is made to resist attacks by hackers, viruses, and any other type of interference from those malicious intentions. In short: It's incredible.
