What Is Data Mart?
Data marts are the most delicious way to get your data on a silver platter; they're here to help. Don't be fooled by their innocent appearance. They're pretty powerful! Data marts are subject-oriented archives that store data and use the retrieved information to assist and support the requirements involved within a particular business function or department. They exist within a single organizational data warehouse repository. They can be used for many things, but they're especially great if you want to do some data analytics on a specific subject matter. You don't have to worry about having access to all kinds of data for your analysis; pick one topic and go with it! Data marts are like that one friend you have who always knows exactly what to wear, and it makes you feel bad about yourself. You need to be more self-assured than they are, and you don't have time to spend hours on Pinterest every day trying to figure out how to be stylish. But you still want to look good, maybe even great! So what do you do? You ask that person for advice, and they give it to you because they like helping people. Then, they take a picture of themselves in their outfit and send it over so that you can see how great it looks on them. That's what data marts are like: They ensure everyone has access to the data they need, even when individual users need help finding it or how to use it. Data marts provide an excellent way for users across an organization or system to share information without worrying about security issues or other factors that could cause problems with information sharing between departments. A data mart is like a mutt. It's the result of a union between data warehouses and business units. It can be thought of as a subset of all an enterprise's information, but it's specifically tailored to each business unit's specific needs. If you think about it… that makes sense! The accounting department has different requirements for its data than the marketing department.
