What Is CAN-SPAM Act?
If you're a business, you probably think that spam happens to other people or maybe it's just something you eat for breakfast. Yet if you've ever had a customer complain about receiving too many emails from your company, then you know that spam is very real. It's also something that the CAN-SPAM Act helps protect against. That's right: a federal law called CAN-SPAM makes sure people aren't bombarded with unwanted emails from companies they don't want to hear from. CAN-SPAM sets rules and regulations for how businesses can send emails to people who have yet to ask them to stop doing so and what kinds of penalties are in place if those rules aren't followed. The law covers all kinds of email marketing (including B2B), but it does make an exception for emails sent between two businesses. So if you're in business with another company (especially if you're trying out some new marketing tactics), then take note: your emails might need to comply with CAN-SPAM laws! The U.S. CAN-SPAM Act is short for Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003. It was implemented to set standards for commercial emailing, often called "spam." The act was designed to protect consumers from receiving unwanted messages while still allowing companies to reach their customers via email. If you want to get email marketing right, you've got to follow the CAN-SPAM Act. It's pretty easy. Just make sure your subject lines accurately reflect email content and consistently identify your messages as electronic advertisements. You also have to tell people how to opt out of future electronic advertising messages but don't worry about that for now. You may have to monitor your contractors who handle online advertising or marketing on behalf of your company, but don't worry about that either. We'll handle it for you!
