DSL-PL requires a particular DSL modem to translate the DSL signal into a data signal. The distance between the DSL modem and the endpoint device can vary greatly but is typically between 100 and 500 feet. BPL has been used in the United States and other countries since the early 2000s. The technology is mainly used for internet access but can transmit electricity, phone service, or cable TV. BPL converts electrical current from a power line into a radio signal and then back into the wind at the receiving end. Due to the high frequency of electricity, this conversion process does not reduce the strength of the electrical current.
