What Is Broadband Over Power Line (BPL)?

Broadband over power line (BPL) is an exciting new way to get online. What's that, you say? Do you need to figure out what BPL is? Don't worry, we'll explain. BPL is the transmission of data over the existing electrical wire using frequencies outside the range of AC power. In other words, it's a long-range means of internet access and intelligent power grids. It works by using special networking equipment to translate electrical signals into data. It means you don't need extra wiring or equipment—plug in and go! It's that simple. So what are you waiting for? Get ready for a whole new world! BPL requires the installation of a modem or networking device at each endpoint of the connection. The distance between these devices can vary greatly depending on the type of BPL used. DSL-over-power-lines (DSL-PL) is a type of BPL that uses higher frequency DSL signals between about 17 and 40 megahertz. DSL-PL requires a particular DSL modem to translate the DSL signal into a data signal. The distance between the DSL modem and the endpoint device can vary greatly but is typically between 100 and 500 feet. BPL has been used in the United States and other countries since the early 2000s. The technology is mainly used for internet access but can transmit electricity, phone service, or cable TV. BPL converts electrical current from a power line into a radio signal and then back into the wind at the receiving end. Due to the high frequency of electricity, this conversion process does not reduce the strength of the electrical current. The receiving equipment converts the radio signal back into an electrical current. Due to the signal's high frequency, BPL can carry data over long distances without expensive transformers. The power lines are often run on high-voltage transmission lines, making them suitable for long-distance data transmission. As long as the receiving equipment has an RPU (rectifier plug unit) or another device that converts the signal back into electricity, BPL is safe to use.
