What Is Application Performance?
When you have started working with a brilliant and awesome cloud provider, two things matter most: application performance and uptime. Application performance is a measure of how well your applications are performing relative to their expected behavior. It's measured in several ways, such as latency, throughput, and bandwidth. Most providers will provide some insight into their application performance regarding these metrics, but knowing what they mean and how they work together is essential. Uptime is the other major factor when considering which cloud provider to choose. You want to know that your applications will be up at all times, not just up but running smoothly and quickly! While application performance is relevant with public and private cloud implementations, it is essential when considering the public cloud and its potential impact on business-critical applications. When operating in a public cloud, monitoring application performance is necessary, as this can lead to potential issues with the cloud provider's infrastructure. When monitoring application performance, it's essential to consider all aspects of the application, from network latency to CPU usage. In the world of application performance, there are two sets of metrics that are closely monitored. The first, and by far the very most important, is the actual performance experienced by the application's end-users: how long it takes for users to get from point A to point B and back again. This measurement is often related to response time: what does it take for an action or request to be completed? The second set of measures includes metrics related to hardware resources, such as CPU and memory usage. The second set of application performance metrics is related to internal application behavior. That is, how well does your application respond to it when it encounters a problem? How well do you know when something is going wrong?
